Ylivieska, Finland

w/ Elina Jaara

2017- unbuilt

The proposal is a contemporary take on traditional finnish steep roofed barrel vault church next to the ruins of the burned down church of Ylivieska.

Proposals location in the middle of the city makes the Church's activities accessible for all citizens. Like its predecessor, the church building not only serves as the main church of the whole city, but also as a lively meeting place. The proposal is a comack of the idea of a church as the center of the whole city. The church is inclusive in nature: it welcomes all citizens. The church hall offers a beautiful view of the ruins of the old church, the cemetery and Hamarinkoski. The ruins will continue to be used for outdoor events. To commemorate the old  church new cross is made from the preserved charred logs of the burned church.
